Description

The Heart Center and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit of the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans (CHNOLA) is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider (Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) with expertise in cardiac critical care to join its growing CICU program. The candidate would be expected to grow this expanding program by performing clinical duties in the inpatient setting. Participation in daily clinical activities, which includes inpatient care of patients with congenital heart defects, management of medical cardiac patients, pre and post-operative care, and advanced procedures. Additional duties included management of patients on vasoactive support, mechanical ventilation, CRRT, and ECMO or Ventricular Assist Devices. Patient population varies from neonates to adults with congenital heart disease that require repeat intervention. The hours for this position will include twelve hours shifts including rotating days/nights/weekends and holidays.  Besides clinical responsibilities, opportunities exist to participate in clinical research, QI initiatives, and education.  Previous APP experience is preferred, however new graduates with ICU experience are welcome to apply.

The Heart Center Faculty includes a team of eight advanced practice providers, eight cardiac intensivists, two cardiac surgeons, and 4 cardiac anesthesiologists. Subspecialty care in the Heart Center includes non-invasive imaging, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, expertise in Fontan management, home-monitoring, neurodevelopment, pulmonary hypertension, pediatric coronary artery disease, and heart failure. Currently, approximately 340 heart catheterizations (75% interventional) and over 300 cardiothoracic surgeries, and 10,000 ambulatory visits are performed each year at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.

Requirements

GENERAL DUTIES

Consultation:

Performs admission evaluation or admits and manages patients as requested. Provides general internal medicine or pediatric consultative services and treatment for patients. Observes inpatients and provides consultation services to surgical colleagues. Provides consultation to nursing personnel, other health care professionals regarding specific analysis and problem resolution. Coordinates care with appropriate specialty providers. Refers patients to specialty services based on the medical requirement, educates the patients and their family members on the medical conditions as a health care advocate.

Other Duties:

Obtains comprehensive medical histories of patients, performs standard physical examinations and documents the findings of health assessments on their medical records. Maintains complete documentation of clinical work performed and completion of billing encounter sheets. Diagnoses medical problems, orders treatments, and performs minor surgical procedures such as suturing, casting, etc. along with other non-surgical procedures.

Attends continuing educational programs to maintain licensure and to keep abreast of current practice within specialty, including specialty certification. Complies with associated LCMC facility’s medical staff bylaws policies, rules, and regulations pertaining to Allied Health Professionals/Advanced Practice Providers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

Combination of appropriate education and work experienced is required:

Master’s Degree in a Nurse Practitioner Program with 2 years of related experience
