The City of Virginia Beach has an exciting leadership opportunity as an EMS Deputy Chief!
Virginia Beach has one of the largest combination EMS systems in the country. Working together, hundreds of volunteers, ten volunteer rescue squads, a volunteer rescue council, a full-service career workforce, and a supportive Virginia Beach Rescue Foundation comprise the VBRescue System: answering more than 58,000 calls for service each year.
This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) Deputy Chief positions as part of a departmental leadership transition. These positions are responsible for supporting the EMS Chief/EMS Executive Deputy Chief in conducting the affairs of the EMS Department and providing leadership to the VB Rescue System. One Deputy Chief is primarily responsible for overseeing programs, resources and personnel related to clinical care, operations and community services, and the other overseeing programs, resources and personnel related to member support and development, and administrative support services.
The EMS Deputy Chief duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Plan, promote and develop goals and objectives for the department.
- Provide coordination of department programs and operations, including development and evaluation of program effectiveness.
- Provide effective leadership to achieve desired outcomes; plan and budget for resources necessary to accomplish goals and objectives.
- Facilitate the development of department personnel, including volunteers.
- Communicate City and department mission, vision, and strategies to staff throughout the organization.
- Develop innovative plans to maximize utilization of resources effectively and efficiently.
- Monitor workforce planning to meet anticipated needs of the department.
- Monitor trends in EMS and healthcare to ensure quality patient care provision is maintained.
- Collaborate with other public safety agencies, regional teams, and state agencies.
- Assume command of the department in the absence of the EMS Chief/ EMS Executive Deputy Chief.
In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in their resume.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
- Extensive experience working with volunteer emergency medical services personnel.
- Completion of additional courses of study and professional development programs in emergency services leadership.
- Master’s Degree from an Accredited College or University in a related field.
